How Often Should Your Family See the Dentist? A Guide for Every Age

One of the most common questions we hear at San Saba Dental is simple: how often do we really need to come in? The honest answer depends on who is asking. A toddler, a teenager in braces and a grandparent with dentures all have different needs. Here is a plain guide for every age in your family.

Why regular visits matter

In a survey of more than 100,000 private dental patients, 76% said the main reason they see a dentist is to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Regular checkups are how that happens. Most problems, from small cavities to early gum disease, are painless at first. A visit every few months lets us catch them while they are small, simple and less expensive to fix.

Babies and toddlers

The American Dental Association recommends a first visit by your child’s first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth. These early visits are short and easy. We take a quick look, check how teeth are coming in and give you tips for brushing and avoiding cavities. The bigger goal is helping your child feel comfortable in the chair before they ever have a problem.

Kids and teens

Most children do well with a checkup and cleaning every six months. Along the way, we may suggest:

  • Sealants, a thin protective coating on back teeth where most childhood cavities start
  • Fluoride to strengthen enamel
  • Sports mouthguards for football, baseball, rodeo and other contact sports
  • An orthodontic check around age seven to see if braces may help later

Teens with braces may need to come in more often, since brackets and wires make it harder to keep teeth clean.

Adults

For most adults, every six months is still the right rhythm. If you have a history of gum disease, we may recommend visits every three or four months to keep it under control. Gum disease has been linked to other health problems, so keeping your gums healthy is about more than your smile.

Call us sooner if you notice any of these:

  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • A tooth that is sensitive to hot, cold or sweets
  • Pain when you chew
  • Bad breath that will not go away
  • A chipped or broken tooth

Seniors

Teeth can last a lifetime with good care, and older adults often benefit from regular visits more than anyone. Dry mouth from medications, older fillings and receding gums can all raise the risk of decay. If you wear dentures, an annual visit lets us check the fit, look for sore spots and screen for oral cancer.

Make it one trip for the whole family

Living in a small town means one trip to the dentist should count. Ask about booking family members back to back so everyone is seen in the same visit. You can learn more about our family dentistry and preventive care, or read what to expect on our new patients page.
